Velingrad
Velingrad is one of the oldest, most beautiful
and most famous Bulgarian spa resorts. It lies
at the western end of Chepino Valley, one of the
most attractive parts of the Rhodope Mountains.
It is situated 81 kilometers from Plovdiv and
133 km from Sofia. The beauty of the landscape
is combined with a mild and propitious climate.
The average annual temperature is 9°C. The
municipality boasts the largest number of sunny
days per year.
Velingrad Location
The vicinities of Velingrad have breath-taking
scenic beauty, such as magnificent coniferous
and deciduous forests, spacious flower-sprinkled
meadows and crystal-pure waters. The most famous
localities are Yundola, Belmeken, Kourtovo, Kladona,
and Chernovruh,. The reservoirs of Batak, Dospat
and Belmeken are favorite spots for hikers and
fishermen alike. There is great potential for
the development of winter tourism and skiing on
the foothills of Mount Syutka.
Velingrad History
The numerous archaeological findings point at
the existence of life here as early as the Iron
Age. Long lasting traces such as stone and bone
tools, bronze artefacts and others have been left
by Thracians, Slavs, Byzantines, and Romans.
Velingrad Spa Treatments
Velingrad ranks first in Bulgaria for the abundance
and diversity of its mineral waters. The total
flow capacity of the more than 80 mineral water
springs is 170 liters per second. They vary considerably
in temperature, mineralisation, radon, silicic
acid and fluorine content, and are suitable for
treatment of a wide range of diseases: a number
of pulmonary diseases, various orthopedic disorders
as well as neurological and gynecological diseases,
including sterility, kidney indisposition, liver
diseases, gastrointestinal diseases etc.
Velingrad Attractions
Together with the numerous mineral waters Velingrad
takes pride in another natural phenomenon as well
- the Kleptuza. This is the biggest Karst spring
in Bulgaria with a flow of 570 liters per second.
